I was really pleased to join Aoife Blight of Barry at the launch of the Two Minute Beach Clean at Whitmore Bay, Barry. Aoife presented her project on the BBC TV show ‘Let’s Get a Good Thing Going’ which was broadcast from the Memo in December, where four Barry people pitched innovative ideas for improving their community. Aoife beat off stiff competition to win, with her simple yet effective idea. An eye-catching board will be permanently placed at the entrance to the beach, with litter pickers and gloves and information, and anyone using the beach is invited to pick up litter for just two minutes. If they want to they can then spread the word by taking a photo for social media, helping to raise awareness, which, it is hoped, will eventually lead to less litter arising the first place. Despite the rain, a good crowd turned out to see the ribbon cut and to do their bit by picking up litter for just two minutes, with the support of O’Shea’s fish and chip bar, Spectrum Brushes and Pride in Barry among others. A fantastic idea for helping to keep our beautiful beaches clean, thank you Aoife and everyone who came along to support her.
