I was pleased and proud to be asked to sponsor an event to commemorate forty years of Welsh Women’s Aid at the Pierhead, on St Dwynwen’s Day, January 25th.
I was the first coordinator of Welsh Women’s Aid, which supports victims of domestic violence and abuse and campaigns for change.
Over the past 40 years we have seen great change and made a lot of progress, but this event was also about renewing our pledge to address the ongoing scourge of violence against women. We cannot forget the shocking statistic that 1 in 3 women in Wales will be affected by domestic violence and abuse.
This event on St Dwynwen’s Day was a day for renewed commitment and resolve by us all, as we move to take stock of the implementation of the Welsh Government’s landmark Violence Against Women Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Act (Wales) 2015 Act. .
My sincere thanks go to all those involved with Welsh Women’s Aid over the past 40 years, and to all the inspiring speakers who took part in the event.
We have achieved a lot but there is still so much more to do! Still we Rise! Fe Godwn Ni!
