Jane Congratulates Welsh Labour Leader

Vale AM Jane Hutt, congratulated Mark Drakeford following the announcement on Thursday 6th December that he had won the campaign to lead the Labour Party in Wales.

Playing a leading role in this campaign, Jane supported Mark Drakeford in the contest to become Leader and First Minister of Wales, and was the first senior Labour politician to say he would be ‘a blessing for Wales’ due to his experience, integrity and intellect.

Jane Hutt and Mark Drakeford served together on the former South Glamorgan County Council and were colleagues in their working lives. Mark Drakeford was a probation officer and worked for Barnados in Ely, before academic appointments in Swansea and Cardiff University where he was appointed Professor of Social Policy. Seconded to the Welsh Government, he was Chief Special Adviser to Rhodri Morgan for 9 years.

He was elected to the Assembly in 2011, serving as Chair of the Health and Social Services Committee. before being appointed as Health and Social Services Minister and latterly Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Brexit.

‘It was a privilege to lead Mark Drakeford’s campaign to become the Leader of Welsh Labour and our next First Minister. On Thursday, Mark Drakeford said he wanted Wales to be ‘a beacon of hope in a darkening world’ and I believe he is the right person to take us through these very uncertain and  challenging times.

I was proud to welcome Mark to the Barry Community Garden to launch his courageous and constructive manifesto. Mark Drakeford is a courageous person of principle and purpose which will be good for Wales.’
