There was overwhelming sadness in the community of Rhoose and much further afield when we learnt that Catherine (Cath) Watkins had passed away on Tuesday 11th December, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Cath came to my attention a few years ago when she contacted me about the Homework Club she was setting up in Rhoose, to provide additional support to young people in her community. She attracted a team of dedicated volunteers who became as passionately committed to the Club as Cath, and I was always delighted to join their memorable Award evenings in Rhoose, backed by the local Tarmac cement works who also committed themselves to Cath’s cause.
Soon Cath’s leadership was recognised by the Vale Council Youth Service, and her services extended across the Vale last summer. She made such an impact on the lives of children and young people, and became an award winning adult learner herself.
Cath will be greatly missed, and we owe it to her to keep her legacy going in support of the pioneering Rhoose Homework Club.
Our thoughts are with her family and friends, and all the young people of Rhoose.
